61 ghee, cooking oil brands declared inedible

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) on Wednesday declared 61 ghee and cooking oil brands unfit for consumption and confiscated 47,233 litres of ghee and cooking oil from the market.

In recent times the provincial food regulatory authority has been super active to keep check and balance in food safety and hygiene. It was formed under the Punjab Food Authority Act 2011, being the first ever agency of its kind in Pakistan.

PFA Director General Muhammad Usman said that the purpose of sample collection drive was to check the quality and standards of the products. The 61 brands of oil and ghee failed the tests and did not meet the standards of Punjab Pure Food Regulation while 118 brands were found up to the mark.  Whereas, the analysis of 88 brands is in the process which would be completed soon.

According to DG,  food safety teams had collected 267 samples of cooking oil and ghee for laboratory test from the open market in the presence of companies’ representatives by following blind-sampling method throughout the province. Out of 47,223 litre/kilo oil and ghee destroyed, PFA destroyed 29,099 litres/kilo products at Lahore Zone, 15,661in Rawalpindi Zone and 2,473 litres/kilo in South Zone.

A list of the oil and ghee brands/products have been issued which have failed to pass the quality test. Many of the brands are transported to other cites and are being sold openly, one must keep checking the quality of the food related products. Next time you buy any cooking oil or ghee do check the brand name thoroughly!
