Dr. Seemin Jamali, former JPMC head, passes away aged 61 in Karachi

Her funeral prayers will be held at the JPMC mosque at Asr tomorrow (Sunday).

Dr. Seemin Jamali, former JPMC head, passed away aged 61 in Karachi on Saturday.

The former executive director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) was in critical condition after her health severely deteriorated.

Her funeral prayers will be held at the JPMC mosque at Asr tomorrow (Sunday).

Her brother Bilal Memon told Dawn.com that Dr Jamali was a cancer patient and was admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital around eight days ago where she breathed her last at 7:30 pm today.

Jamali was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2020.

Dr. Jamali has served as the executive director for JPMC, which is one of the largest public healthcare facilities in the country, from November 2016 to August 2021.

Condolences and tributes pour in for the Iron Lady Dr Seemin Jamali will be always remembered for her untiring efforts, dedication, and 33 years of public service running one of the largest government hospitals in Pakistan.

Dr. Jamali joined JPMC as a medical officer in 1988 after completing her medical education in Nawabshah and a house job at Civil Hospital Karachi.

In 1993, Dr. Jamali acquired an advanced degree in public health management (MPHM) from Thailand and was appointed as the in-charge of JPMC’s emergency department in 1995.

Later, she was awarded a scholarship for a post-doctoral fellowship in public health policy and injury prevention at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA.

She became the hospital’s joint executive director in 2010 and then executive director after six years.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed grief over the death of Dr. Jamali. He said she was a brave and strong woman and prayed for late Dr. Seemin Jamali.
