Gandhi’s statue vandalized in Gujarat’s Amreli district

A statue of “Bapu Ji” of India, Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat’s Amreli district has been vandalised by some unidentified persons late Friday night, local police said.

The statue, located at Hari Krishna Lake, was set up in 2018 in a garden near a lake dug up unveiled by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017, an official said.

“The incident happened Friday night. Efforts are in process to identify and grab the culprits,” said police.

Meanwhile in India, the nationwide protests entered their fourth week. On Saturday, more than 100,000 demonstrators took to streets in a peaceful march in southern India, chanting slogans against Indian premier Modi’s new citizenship law.

The protest, dubbed the “Million March”, was organised by an umbrella group of Muslim and civil society organisations in Hyderabad city of India.

The protesters were holding placards that reads “Withdraw CAA immediately” and “India’s only religion is Secularism”.

Following the unrest after the citizenship bill was passed; at least 27 people have been killed in protest-related clashes with Indian police since early December.

Demonstrations against the CAA also went ahead in several other Indian cities on Saturday with hundreds turning out in cities in the southern state of Karnataka.
