Kekra 1 has oil and gas reservoir but ‘water wet’

After 4-month drilling in the deep sea at Kekra 1 and multiple times testing of soil, it was declared the well at Indus G –Block is dry. The Petroleum Division of Energy Ministry, however, on Sunday said that the well had shown abundant hydrocarbon reservoir but these are water wet.

According to the press release of the Petroleum Division, it has been told that drilling was resumed on Friday with further 140 metres at 5,492 metres depth.

“The log results show a good quality reservoir but unfortunately water wet without any gas effect,” the press release told.

The current depth after drilling 140 metres has reached 5,634 metres, will be drilled some 55 metres more before plug and abandon operations.

The boring activities were started off on 13th January, 2019 and after reaching a period of four-month it was officially announced on Saturday that activities at Kekra-1 had been stopped because no reserves were found.

It has now been decided to plug it in the coming days after 55 metres of more drilling in the area.

The offshore drilling were the collaborated effort of various multinational oil and gas corporations including Italian company ENI, US corporation Exxon Mobil, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited and Pakistan Petroleum Limited.

The drilling at Kekra 1 was the 18th attempt of various oil and gas companies. The first offshore drilling was done in 1963 by US company Sun Oil.
