Canadian PM Trudeau joins thousands of mourners remembering martyred Muslim family

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined several thousand mourners in a vigil Tuesday evening to remember three generations of a Muslim family killed in a premeditated hate crime.

Addressing the mourners, after placing flowers on the steps of the mosque, Trudeau said his government would take action, without giving details.

“This was an act of evil. But the light of the people here today, the light of the lives of the Afzaal family – that will always outweigh the dark,” Trudeau said.

Sharing a message on microblogging site Twitter, PM Trudeau says, “To those who knew the Afzaal family, to the son who survived, to Muslims in London and in communities across Canada, to everyone who feels sad or angry or afraid: You are not alone. Canadians across the country are mourning with you and standing with you – tonight, and always.”

According to police, aged 74 and 44, a 46-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl – a grandmother, mother, father, and their teenage daughter – were killed on Sunday night when a 20-year-old identified as Nathaniel Veltman ploughed his black pickup truck into a group of pedestrians in the city of London, Ontario.

A nine-year-old boy is a lone survivor who remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
