313 newly elected members of the Punjab Assembly took oath amid protests and delays on Friday.
Outgoing Speaker Sibtain Khan administered oath to the newly-elected members of the Punjab Assembly.
He further congratulated all the MPAs on assuming their new role and wished them success.
The maiden session of the Punjab Assembly was attended by 313 lawmakers out of which 215 belonged to the PML-N and its allied parties while 98 members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) also took the oath.
PML-N’s nominee for Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz, former federal minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and PTI leader Aamir Dogar were among those newly elected MPAs in attendance.
Meanwhile, the election of the speaker and deputy speaker will be carried out tomorrow (Saturday).
The secretary of the assembly Mr. Amer Habib said that the speaker and deputy speaker will be elected tomorrow (Saturday) through secret balloting.
“Nomination papers for speaker and deputy speaker will be collected and scrutinised today,” he added.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has named Malik Ahmad Khan and Zaheer Iqbal Channar as its nominees for the roles of speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.
The Punjab Assembly is the largest elected house in Pakistan, with 371 seats, comprising 297 general seats and 74 reserved seats, including 66 for women and eight for minorities.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has so far issued notifications for 42 reserved seats for women and five for minorities.
