Nokia to set up 4G/LTE network on the moon

Nokia will set up a 4G/LTE network on the moon. This developemnet comes as NASA plans to build a lunar base and sustain a human presence on the Moon.

Nokia-a former cellular giant has been awarded a $14.1 million contract by NASA to deploy a cellular network on the moon.

The project is more likely in the context of NASA’s Artemis Program, which seeks to establish small colonies and conduct exploration on the planet by 2024.

In a series of tweets, Bell Labs announced: “To the moon! We are excited to have been named by Nasa as a key partner to advance “Tipping Point” technologies for the moon, to help pave the way towards a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface.”

“Our pioneering innovations will be used to build and deploy the first wireless network on the moon, starting with 4G/LTE technologies and evolving to 5G,” it said in another tweet.

Terming it a “groundbreaking network”, Bell Labs said it will be the “critical communications fabric for data transmission applications, including the control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation over lunar geography, and streaming of high definition video.”

Bell Labs added that, “This mission will validate the future of other operational deployments and the potential for human habitation on the moon.”

As being reported, this grant is part of a whopping $370 million worth of contracts under NASA’s “Tipping Point” program, meant to use both commercial and public partners to advance research and development for space exploration.

Nokia’s plan is to build a 4G/LTE network (which would eventually be enhanced to a 5G network), making it the first advanced telecommunications network in space.
