Everything you need to know about “Baby Shark”

It got me thinking how just a random children’s song became a global phenomenon. Not that I like it, in fact I find it pretty annoying, but the fact that it has been on every child’s (and some teens’) tongue for some time.

They would sing it at school, Baby Shark doo doo doo doo doo doo.

They would sing it before bed, Mommy Shark doo doo doo doo doo doo.

They would sing it while they eat, Daddy Shark doo doo doo doo doo doo.

They would sing it while playing, Grandma Shark doo doo doo doo doo doo.

Parents of every young one, say 4-6 years old children, know what it is about. And to the rest, we are talking about the world’s inevitable phenomenon that is “Baby Shark”.

The catchy children’s song has gone extremely viral around the world. The question is how, and why. However it isn’t hard to answer. We have seen how K-pop has emerged worldwide. Even if it was a big thing before its emergence, it has now become even bigger. K-pop groups like BTS, EXO, TWICE and GOT7 have not only made a tremendous progress of fan growing in American or European region, but in Pakistan, India and other South Asian countries as well. It won’t be wrong to say that Baby Shark is a strategy to captivate the youngest ever audience by this K-pop style children song.

Upon some research, I came to know that the tune of the song isn’t new. The tune was made for a nursery rhyme more than 20 years ago. And interestingly enough, the song was uploaded on YouTube 2 years ago. And now, suddenly, it has around 1.8 billion views!

It is not just a children song anymore. There are even teens and adults talking about it. In fact, the first time I came to know about the song was via my 16 year old sister who kept singing this almost annoying song. Also, what I read in The Guardian was quite triggering.

According to The Guardian

“The fact that people at a music festival who were otherwise engaged in watching Richard Dawson sing avant-folk songs about peasant life in eighth-century Northumbria would turn from that, seamlessly, to ask: “Have you heard Baby Shark?” suggests there is no reef to offer shelter. You’ll never go in the water again.”

Okay, I get it. People talked about it in a music festival. The song even made to the social media platforms of celebrities like Cardi B, Tyra Banks, Kylie Jenner and Jimmy Fallon.

Wasn’t it enough?

It is said that the original song is not as innocent as its popular version. But the popular one has quite made an impact on people’s life. If you didn’t know the song, and now you do (do do do do do do), good luck with getting it out of your head.
