US Presidential Election: World leaders congratulate Joe Biden, Kamala Harris on their victory

World leaders have extended their congratulatory messages to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Saturday after most of the major US media outlets announced that the presidential race was officially over.

Democrat Joe Biden is set to become the 46th president of the country after winning in the state of Pennsylvania, which got him 20 more electoral college votes, as per a CNN report.

While history has been made by this Democratic victory as California Sen. Kamala Harris set to be sworn in as the country’s first female vice president, and the first vice president of color.

A numeber of world leaders have issued brief statements on Twitter.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel:

“Congratulations! The American people have made their decision,” Merkel said in a statement.

“Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States of America. I sincerely wish him the best of luck and every success and I would also like to congratulate Kamala Harris, the first female vice president-elect in the history of your country.”

“I look forward to working with President Biden. Our trans-Atlantic friendship is indispensable if we are to deal with the major challenges of our time,” she said.
