Nawaz Sharif, Maryam booked in a treason case for conspiring against Pakistan’s state institutions

Former Pakistani Prime Minister and PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and other PML-N’s party leaders have been booked on treason charges on Monday by the Punjab authorities.

A case has been registered against Nawaz Sharif for inciting a criminal conspiracy through his “provocative speeches” made in London to “defame Pakistan’s institutions”, it emerged on Monday.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered by a citizen, Badar Rasheed, against Sharif in Shahdara police station in Lahore.

As being reported, the case has been registered under the provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code for criminal conspiracy.

“Nawaz Sharif’s speech was aimed to indirectly benefit his friend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” stated the FIR.

It also alleged that the former prime minister’s speeches defamed Pakistan’s high courts and armed forces in front of the international community.

The complainant claimed that in his recent speeches, Nawaz  Sharif supported the policies of India so that Pakistan would continue to remain on the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) ‘grey list’. The aim of Sharif’s speeches is also to divert attention from human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, the complainant added.

PML-N leaders Rana Sanaullah, Ahsan Iqbal, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Pervez Rashid, Marriyum Aurangzeb, and others have also been named in the case.
