Oscars to shorten the awards gala and to add ‘best popular film’ award category

It was earlier when the organizers of the Academy awards “Oscars”, came under fire for plummeting ratings and were accused of elitism. It could be keeping that in view, it was announced by the organizers that they are creating a new category to honor top blockbusters and also will be shortening up the awards ceremony to attract more viewers.

“Change is coming to the Oscars,” was tweeted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is responsible for putting together the glittering awards gala every year in late February or early March. Tweet also stated the details as well, “A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film. We’ve set an earlier airdate for 2020: mark your calendars for February 9. We’re planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast.”

As it was earlier this year that the 90th Oscars awards ceremony on March 4 lasted nearly four hours and it posted all-time low television ratings with only 26.5 million viewers.

For this reason, in 2019, organizers are aiming to produce a “more accessible” three-hour show, by presenting some of the awards during commercial breaks. It was revealed by Academy president John Bailey and chief executive officer Dawn Hudson to the members.
