Human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari, ex-lawmaker Ali Wazir remanded into police custody

Human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and ex-lawmaker Ali Wazir were remanded into police custody on Sunday.

As reported, a local court in Islamabad remanded human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leader Ali Wazir into police custody in a case of “interference in state affairs”.

Both of them were arrested in separate instances in the wee hours of Sunday on the charges of interference in state affairs.

The two have been separately booked in a case, registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Imaan Mazari and Ali Wazir were presented before Duty Judicial Magistrate Ehtisham Alam Khan.

The police had sought their physical remand.

The court remanded Imaan to police custody for a day and Ali Wazir for two days.

Imaan’s counsel filed a plea for the return of her mobile phone and other belongings that were confiscated at the time of her arrest.

At this, the court sought a report from the Tarnol Police’s Station House Officer (SHO) on the matter.

On the other hand, the court remanded Ali Wazir into police custody for a day in a terrorism case and also ordered that Imaan Mazari will stay in women’s police station’s custody in this case.

The court directed the police to present Mazari before an anti-terrorism court tomorrow, which will decide on her physical remand in the terrorism case.

“Islamabad Capital Police has arrested Ali Wazir and Imaan Mazari,” the police said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Both suspects were wanted by the Islamabad Police for investigation. All action will be taken in accordance with law.”

However, the police did not specify what case they were investigating the human rights lawyer and the lawmaker from South Waziristan.
