Oscars 2024: Barbie’s Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie snubbed from key nominations
Barbie's other nominations are for original song, production design and costume design.
Oscars 2024 nominations are out and in a major blow, Barbie’s Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were excluded from the directing and lead actress categories.
Excluding the two major women responsible for the film that became the biggest blockbuster of 2023, seems not good at all.
Many expected Gerwig and Robbie to show up in the best director and best actress categories after Barbie movie bagged $1.44bn (£1.14bn) at the box office worldwide.
Interestingly, Ryan Gosling gets nominated for playing Ken but Margot Robbie wasn’t nominated for playing Barbie in the movie.
There were nods for Barbie’s star and director but elsewhere!
Robbie has been recognised as a producer in the best picture line-up, while Gerwig gets nominated for best-adapted screenplay.
While Robbie was snubbed on a best actress nod, her co-star America Ferrera scored a surprise supporting actress nomination.
And as soon as the Oscar Nominations were announced, film fans were left annoyed.
Reactions to the exclusion of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig are poring in on X-platform’s timeline.
So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie #Oscars

As wonderful as America Ferrera is in Barbie, her now iconic monologue being recognized but not Margot Robbie’s subtle mannerism of experiencing what it is to be human is baffling. She IS the movie. #Oscars fumbled it real bad here. pic.twitter.com/SwNNzkX3ep

If Ryan deserved a nom, then Margot certainly did, the fact she wouldn't have won isn't the point. It almost feels like the Academy deliberately played into the theme of the movie to get people talking. #Oscars haven't been about who actually deserves it for a long time. #Barbie pic.twitter.com/310vTCXqEB
