Indian couple sells eight-month-old child to buy iPhone 14

The baby was rescued by police, as per the Indian media report

In the most bizarre turn of events, a couple from the Indian state of West Bengal is reported to have sold their eight-month-old baby to purchase an iPhone 14 and fund their travel for creating content on Instagram.

As per the Indian media report, the mother of the child and the buyer woman have been arrested by the police while the infant’s father is now on the run.

The local authorities sprang into action after residents noticed the couple’s recent acquisition of a brand-new phone, the Indian media reports.

The police in West Bengal, India, said a couple sold their baby to pay for an iPhone for 200000 Indian rupees.

The couple in question has been identified as Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi, as reported.

The baby was sold the baby to Priyanka Ghosh, who lives in the same region, The Express reported.

“After interrogation, the mother admitted to the crime and informed that she and her husband wanted to use the money to take trips across the state so that they could create content for Instagram Reels,” the official said.

For those unserved, the World Bank notes that West Bengal has pockets of high poverty, which might have accounted for the suspicion.

According to a 2022 PRS Legislative Research report, the region’s GDP per capita – an indicator of income – was roughly US$1,600, just a little more than the price of a brand-new iPhone 14 in the country at the time.
