Elections 2024: SC suspends LHC’s order on election officers

CJP Qazi Faez Isa-led bench directs ECP to issue election schedule tonight, Dec 15.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan suspended the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) order that suspended the appointment of returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs) from the bureaucracy.

The apex court also directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to issue the election programme by tonight.

The development has paved the way for the elections to take place on February 8, a major demand of political stakeholders and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Late Friday evening, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa dictated the order as he heard the petition by the ECP challenging the LHC action.

A three-member bench, headed by CJP Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justice Sardar Tariq and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, took up the appeal filed by the ECP on the LHC order halting the training of district returning officers (DROs) and returning officers (ROs).
