Few hours of Saturday night heavy rain wreaks havoc in Karachi
Citizens urged to avoid unnecessary travel
A few hours of Saturday night heavy rain wreaked havoc in Karachi.
As reported heavy rain that stared around 8 pm local time leashed 90% area of Karachi resulting in urban flooding in low lying areas.
More rain with hails is expected on Sunday as well.
According to the data released by Met office, the maximum amount of rainfall was recorded in PAF Faisal Base (75 millimetres) followed by Malir (64mm), and Surjani Town (63.8mm).
The amount of rainfall recorded till 11pm in other areas of Karachi is as follows:
Keamari (55mm), Quaidabad (52mm), old airport area (51mm), Gulshan-i-Hadeed (50mm), PAF Masroor Base (47.2mm), Jinnah Terminal (42mm), Saadi Town (37.6mm), North Karachi (33.6mm), University Road (30mm), Gulshan-i-Maymar (23.8mm), Nazimabad (23.5mm), Korangi (15mm) with trace rainfall in Orangi Town and Defence Housing Authority.
Following the rain, major arteries of the metropolis were submerged under rainwater and commuters were stuck in their vehicles. The few hours of rain unviled city administration’s unpreparedness to cope with such weather.
Following the heavy rain Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab urged people to avoid unnecessary movement, saying that teams were deployed to clear major roads.
Please avoid unnecessary movement. It’s still raining in different areas. Teams have been deployed to clear the major arteries of the city. Naalaas are flowing on full capacity. Some of the pumping stations have shut down. Issues are being addressed. Will keep people posted
