Saim Ayub spooning the ball reminds cricket fans of Saeed Anwar

That cover drive!

Batter Saim Ayub spooning the ball has reminded the cricket fans of Saeed Anwar!

Friday evening saw Multan Sultans beat Peshawar Zalmi by 56 runs in the fifth match of the eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

However, Zalmi’s young talent Saim Ayub brought back memories of the iconic Pakistan batsman Saeed Anwar.

Saim started his innings with a solid cover drive and scored his maiden half-century to stabilise Zalmi’s innings.

Saim got bowled out for 53 runs off 37 balls laced with three boundaries and as many maximums.

Playing the ball beautifully using the wrists has been a speciality of Saeed Anwar along with ace footwork.

And that is what cricket fans saw in Saim Ayub’s batting style.

Here is what the commentators said when Saim Ayub faced the deliveries:

  • There’s a hint of Brian Lara in him.
  • He reminds me a bit of Saeed Anwar. The way he uses his wrists.
  • He was always technically strong. But what he’s added to his pack are these big shots
  • He knows how to play the extra cover drive
  •

And the final verdict: Pakistan have found a new Saeed Anwar!
