American man dies while proposing to girlfriend underwater

In a tragic turn of events, an American man drowned immediately after he made an underwater proposal to his girlfriend. Steven Weber, a resident of Louisiana, US, was vacationing with his girlfriend Kenesha Antoine at underwater Manta Resort in Tanzania, Africa. The couple was staying in a submerged cabin which they had booked for four nights.

“It is with the deepest regret that we inform that a fatal accident occurred at The Manta Resort on Thursday 19 September 2019,” said the resort in its statement.

The footage of the proposal is also making rounds on social media that Weber’s girlfriend filmed and shared. In the footage, he can be seen sticking a paper on the cabin window, as swims through the water.

“I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… everything I love about you, I love more every day!” wrote Webber on the sheet.

After that, the young man turns the sheet to reveal his marriage proposal as he takes out a ring from his pocket. Seconds after the proposal, Webber is seen swimming back but was never able to emerge from the deep water.

“He never got to hear her answer” to his proposal, which would have been “a million times, yes,” wrote Kenesha Antoine on her Facebook.

She added, “We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable.”

The cabin the couple had rented for  $1,700/night is built 10m (32ft) deep and 250m (820ft) from the shore.

US State Department also issued a condolence statement on the tragic incident.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” said the statement.
