The reign of King Frederik X of Denmark begins

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark steps down on Sunday to be replaced by her son Danish Crown Prince Frederik

Copenhagen witnessed a historic day, as after 52 years, Queen Margrethe II, 83, abdicated.

She signed the document of her abdication at 2 pm local time at the Council of State and the reign of King Frederik X of Denmark began.

As reported, her last words before leaving the Council of State were: ‘God save the King.’

An emotional former Queen Margrethe was seen leaving the Council of State after signing the abdication document and watching King Frederik X take her place.

At 3 pm local time, new Danish King Frederik X stepped out onto the balcony at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, along with his wife Queen Mary and and their four children, after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed the change of throne.
