Uncertainty surrounds the Pakistan General Elections 2024

Uncertainty surrounds the Pakistan general election to be held on 8 Feb 2024 as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) paused a training session for ROs and DROs following the LHC’s Thursday order suspending the electoral watchdog’s notification regarding the appointment of ROs and DROs from the bureaucracy.
In the latest development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday moved the Supreme Court (SC) against the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) order halting the training of district returning officers (DROs) and returning officers (ROs), which affected the polling process.
Meanwhile, major political parties — Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PMLQ), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and Awami National Party (ANP)— on Friday decided to become a party in the said case about the appointment of returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs) from the bureaucracy being heard by the Lahore High Court (LHC).
The decision in the said case is likely to be announced sometime tonight.
As reported, despite the SC’s staff ending their day, returned and Court Room No. 1 was opened on Friday evening.
