Lata Mangeshkar: India’s most celebrated singer turns 89 today

Lata Mangeshkar, India’s most celebrated and respected playback singer turns 89 today.

She sang her first song when she was 13. And to date, she is one of those stars who have spent the most years in the film industry. She has sung in more than a thousand movies, in 36 different Indian regional languages.

Even after spending 7 decades in Indian music industry, she is still one of the bests of all time. It was the last time in 2015 when she recorded her last song for a movie, however, it does not really matter after all the beautiful musical tracks she has given to the music industry. According to Dilip Kumar, “Lata Mangeshkar’s melodious voice resides in all of us.”

Born in the family of performers, Mangeshkar grew up in awe of music and decided to make a career in it in order to continue her father’s rich legacy. And here she is today, as one of those musical artists who have seen, brought and experienced the evolution of music in Indian film industry and witnessed its every era, even became a part of it.

She has sung some of the most extraordinary tracks that are loved by people of every age. She has collaborated with the singers of every musical era Indian music industry has seen. From 1940s to 1970s she collaborated with her sisters, Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar, Muhammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and Manna Dey. Later on she mainly collaborated with Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam.

Social media is flooded with birthday wishes to Lata Mangeshkar from her fans from all over the world. Bollywood’s renowned singer, Shaan, wishes her and says,

“I wish her a very happy birthday with long life and good health. Lataji is the teacher of us all. I have learnt a lot from her. She taught me how to control breath while singing and not making it too obvious, taught everything about the dynamics of the vocals and how to brings expressions in voice in a subtle way. Lataji is Lataji. No one can match her level of perfection.”

The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, also wished Lata Mangeshkar on her birthday.
