Tributes pour in for the iconic voice of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ Ameen Sayani, who passed away aged 91.

As reported, iconic Indian radio presenter Ameen Sayani suffered a heart attack on Feb 20th, Tuesday evening. He was rushed to a hospital in South Mumbai, where he passed away.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, February 22.

Sayani, known for his mellifluous voice, initially worked as an English-language presenter for All India Radio (AIR) in Bombay, Mumbai. While the Binaca Geetmala,” launched in 1952, later became his signature.

 

Sayani became a household name with his signature ‘Behno aur Bhaiyo’ greetings on the music show.

 

Tributes have been pouring in for Sayani on social media platforms following his sad demise. 

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: “Shri Ameen Sayani Ji’s golden voice on the airwaves had a charm and warmth that endeared him to people across generations. Through his work, he played an important role in revolutionizing Indian broadcasting and nurtured a very special bond with his listeners. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family, admirers, and all radio lovers. May his soul rest in peace.”

India’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur in a post on X said: “Saddened by the demise of Ameen Sayani, the iconic radio announcer from the golden age of radio and the host of the iconic show ‘Binaca Geetmala’. For most of us, he was the voice of the radio, who, with his magical wordplay, entertained and engaged us in a way no one had before. My condolences to his family, fans, and followers in this difficult time. Ameen Sayani is no longer with us, but his magical voice lives on.”

Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher shared a short video, expressing how Sayani’s voice entertained him when he had nothing to do, and wrote in Hindi, “Brothers & Sisters! Today a musical thread of my childhood was broken! When we were young, the whole family was as eager to hear #AmeenSayani ji’s voice. Sometimes even more than the singers! #BinacaGeetMala used to work as a therapy for us. Thanks Amin Sayani sir! For your voice and personality! Om Shanti! #Legend #Radio #Childhood (sic).”

Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee shared a post that read, “Ameen Sayani ji goodbye! Thank you very much for decorating our childhood with your voice and the world of music! Sisters and brothers, this is a beautiful song, this line will always echo in your ears!!! Be happy wherever you live, this is my prayer (sic).”

 

Ajay Devgn posted a tribute to Sayani by sharing a throwback picture of him and wrote, “Binaca Geetmala was such a huge part of my childhood growing up, I still remember waking up to the sweet melodies of my favorite Bollywood songs. Rest in peace #AmeenSayani. We will always remember you for your golden voice.”
