Yunhi Episode-3 Review: Portrayal of Kim continues to disappoint audience

There seems to be a major flaw in writing and execution of this play

Hum TV drama serial Yunhi continues to be a disappointment with quite a cliched character portrayal of its protagonist and stereotype narrative of the play. The onus of this lies both on the writer Sarwat Nazir and director Ehshaamuddin for not creating a well-researched character of ex-pat Kim. In the previous episode, we have already had issues with the character portrayal of Kim and in this episode, things turn even worse making it a hard watch.

The opening scene is when Dawood finds Kim in his room. Instead of him creating a fuss, Kim creates a huge drama blaming Dawood for intentionally coming to his room. Dawood endures just because Kim is a guest otherwise Kim has not spare any chance to humiliate Dawood, and she starts calling him a “Terrorist” once again. The over-emphasis on the word ‘Terrorist’ depicts the stereotypical narrative of the 2000s era which no one wants to buy in 2023. Too dated narrative!

Secondly, the character portrayal of the protagonist of Yunhi seems a major flaw in writing and execution. For that Yunhi is facing a backlash not just from critics but from Twitteraties and the public too. Kim is a thorough ” Badtameez Larki” who is too much for a heroine. She calls elders by their names and despite Iqbal Phupho correcting her she insists on calling her Iqbal is not a cool thing.

Deepak Parwani shines with his spectacular performance throughout this episode, he looks like American based Pakistani doctor. Bilal Ashraf has also done a decent job as Dawood, we are intrigued to know more about him. Well isn’t Kim’s father a doctor why he is not treating her own daughter? Why Kim is calling Dawood David? If she knows how to read and write Urdu then we expect her of having basic knowledge about culture and Pakistani society.

The cute characters of Yunhi are Daniyal and Soraiya, we see that Soraiya is in some kind of relationship with a boy. We get to know the reason why Dr Naveed has come back to Pakistan, it is not his guilt but his daughter Kim had been romantically involved with a guy George and wants to marry him. Dr Naveed has brought her to Pakistan for two weeks and his wish is to marry her off to a Muslim Pakistani but he knows he cannot do that against her wish. By the way, Dawood’s murmuring to Astaghfar on watching Kim and George’s pic on her phone looks cute. However, Kim calling her David over and over looks annoying. Seems a hard watch, bit disappointed by its writing and direction but intrigued to know what happens next. I like all the characters in the play except Kim!
