Amal Clooney will fight the legal battle for Rohingya Muslims at the UN highest court

A human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, will now be representing Rohingya Muslims at the UN’s highest court. Clooney, was hired by the Maldivian government to represent it in seeking justice for the persecuted Muslims of Myanmar.

The Maldivian government will be formally joining the Muslim African state of The Gambia to challenge Myanmar´s 2017 military crackdown whose atrocities caused around 740,000 Rohingya to flee their homeland and seek shelter in neighboring Bangladesh.

“I am delighted to have been asked to represent the Maldives before the International Court of Justice. Accountability for genocide in Myanmar is long overdue and I look forward to working on this important effort to seek judicial remedies for Rohingya survivors,” said Amal.

Last month, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) unanimously ruled, ordering Buddhist-majority Myanmar to implement emergency measures to prevent the genocide of Rohingya.

Rohingya leaders have welcomed the move by the Maldives, thanking the actions taken by the Maldivian government.

“Rohingya have been seeking justice since 1978 when the genocide against them effectively began. Your action today speaks louder than the countless statements about us which are issued. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” said Ro Nay San Lwin, rights activist and co-founder of Free Rohingya Coalition.
