Gazan journalist Motaz Azaiza has been honoured as ‘Man Of The Year’ by GQ Middle East!

Motaz Azaiza has been a leading voice in spreading awareness about the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The publication honoured Motaz for becoming the embodiment of hope for the people of Gaza and the rest of the world with his coverage.

“His work personifies the power of digital activism,” the publication wrote, adding “his humanity is an important reminder that bravery appears in many forms. Sometimes we choose it, other times it chooses us, and in the case of Azaiza, choice wasn’t even an option.”

Since October 7, Motaz’s Instagram posts and media appearances have captured the world’s audiences, offering humane and tragic insight into the plight of the Palestinians.

He also lost 15 relatives in an Israeli airstrike on his house.

Motaz’s Instagram page only had 25,000 followers till Oct 7, but now, Motaz Azaiza has over 13 million people following his page.

“Much like his peers on the ground in Gaza, he reminds us that no matter who we are or where we’re from, it’s us- ordinary people, men, and women- who have the power to enact that very change that we want to see,” the publication added.

He graduated from Al-Azhar University of Gaza in 2021 with a degree in English Language and Literature; the same university that has now been reduced to rubble by Israel’s recent bombings.

“This year, we disbanded our categories — there’s no Iconoclast, Maverick, nor Legend. Yet, with Azaiza among the ranks, our selection carries more weight than ever before. Much like his peers on the ground in Gaza, he reminds us that no matter who we are or where we’re from, it’s us – ordinary people, men, and women – who have the power to enact that very change that we want to see.

As he continues to bravely speak truth to power, we pray for his safety and for those around him,” GQ added.
