Torrential rain wreaks havoc in Gwadar

Rain water inundates entire coastal town

Torrential rain wreaks havoc in Gwadar on Tuesday.

Over 15 hours of downpours bring life to a halt in the coastal city forcing residents to leave their houses amid urban flooding.

As reported, at least seven houses were demolished, while a large number of others had been partially affected.

Several parts of Balochistan received torrential rain on Tuesday causing alarm about flooding, particularly in Gwadar.

Balochistan’s Senator Kauda Bakhsh requested the authorities concerned, especially the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), to declare Gwadar a calamity-hit region.

He said that the entire old town in Gwadar was submerged in up to 2 to 3 feet of rainwater after the heavy rain, which was still pounding the city.

“The water has entered the houses and people don’t even have a place to sleep,” he added.

Gwadar’s DC informed on Tuesday evening that the rain has temporarily stopped in the city and that the internal arteries in the city have been inundated but the road connecting Gwadar to Turbat and Karachi is still available for travelling.

On the other hand, PDMA Director General Jahanzaib Khan told Geo News that he is in contact with the Gwadar DC regarding the situation.

He said that two teams equipped with dewatering machines and boats have been sent to the town.

He said that temporary shelter tents and other goods will be sent immediately if asked by the DC Gwadar.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in its advisory today forecast rains, thunder and hailstorms in most parts of the country and snowfall in hilly areas, starting February 29 till March 2, under a new westerly wave.

“Heavy rainfall may generate flash floods and heavy snowfall may disrupt daily life in vulnerable areas,” the PMD warned.
