Punjab extends COVID-19 lockdown until July 30

Punjab authorities have decided to extend lockdown measures to contain the spread of coronavirus till July 30, the provincial health department announced on Tuesday.

The decision came after the number of coronavirus cases surge to 87,492 in the province. So far, the province has the highest 2,026 deaths in the country.

At least 63,977 have recovered from the pandemic in the province.

“We have decided to extend restrictions for another two weeks, till July 30, at the initiative of the Health department aimed at improving the epidemiological situation,” the statement said.

The following restrictions will be imposed during the lockdown period.

  • Educational institutions, wedding halls, restaurants, parks and cinema halls will remain closed
  • Social gathering, religious or sports activities will not be allowed
  • Businesses will remain open Monday through Friday from 9am to 7pm
  • Medical stores and puncture shops will be open 24 hours a day
  • Inter-district transport will be allowed to run 24 hours a day
  • Grocery stores will be open throughout the week from 9am to 7
  • Social and religious gatherings, sports activities will not be allowed
  • Churches will only be open on Sundays from 7am to 5pm
  • Call centers will be allowed to function with 50% staff

Secretary Primary and Secondary Health Care retired Capt Muhammad Usman said the notification will be effective immediately, while the decision for neighbourhoods under a “smart lockdown” will be notified separately.
