It took time for Vernon Philander to make his name in South African cricket, but it is safe to say the cricket world is well aware of this powerful bowler now. Philander made his one-day international debut against Ireland in Belfast in 2007, taking 4-12 in that match. He was then selected for the inaugural ICC World T20 and made a further six ODI appearances that year.. Two outstanding seasons in South Africa’s first-class competition was enough to thrust him back on to the international scene in 2012, and an outstanding first five months in Test cricket saw the quick reach 50 wickets in just seven matches. With a bowling game he bases on the likes of Glenn McGrath and Shaun Pollack, Philander has proved to be a good foil for the pace of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel on the Test arena with his controlled swing.
Once told South African media outlet The New Age his favourite film was Taken and if a movie was ever made of his life, he wanted to be played by Liam Neeson.
