Parizaad Episode-1 Review: Beginning of an interesting but problematic story premises

HUM TV has started a new drama serial Parizaad having a stellar cast. The play is based on Hashim Nadeem’s novel with the same title and it is directed by Shehzad Kashmiri. Parizaad is an MD Productions and it has Noman Ijaz, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Yumna Zaidi in the leading cast and Syed Muhammad Ahmed, Urwa Hocane, Ushna Shah, Yumna Zaidi, Saboor Ali, Mashal Khan, Tipu Shah, Kiran Tabeer, Leyla Zuberi, Madiha Rizvi, Malik Hamid Raza, Nadia Afgan, Paras Masroo and others. The story of the play seems to revolve around the protagonist of the play Parizaad who seems a neglected soul just because he does not meet so-called societal set appearance standards.

The episode begins on a gloomy note, a dark-skinned boy is born to a laborer’s humble house. It is shown that the child is unwanted and unloved by his own father, however, his mother named him Parizaad. The boy himself is mocked for his name Parizaad just because being dark-skinned he is not fulfilling the societal so-called beauty standards so how does he dare to keep such a fancy name. The story premises is interesting and unique but it’s also quite problematic and disturbing.

One of the disturbing factors is the choice of the actor. Ahmed Ali Akbar is quite a handsome and fair-skinned actor why he has been given this role? Why has any dark-skinned actor has not been assigned for this role? Another problematic thing is that the protagonist has shown someone who does meet societal set beauty standards thus considered ugly just because he is dark-skinned? Is dark complexion symbolizes ugliness? Well according to our desi culture fair skin is definitely equivalent to beauty, however with time things have changed as well as our beauty standards, so this script seems a bit outdated for modern times.

Parizaad is portrayed as a sensitive soul who is poetic, well-mannered, and hard-working. He studies hard and also gives tuition to support his brothers but after the death of his parents, he is being neglected by his family only his sister is the one who takes care of him. We have seen that Parizaad is mocked by his friends and also he is having a company of loafer boys.

Besides Ahmed Ali Akbar we have also been introduced to Ushna Shah’s character as Naheed in the story. Parizaad is giving Urdu tuition to Naheed and he is doing his job perfectly well but then because of his loafer friend Parizaad gets into big trouble due to some misunderstanding. Will Parizaad be able to defend himself and will be able to speak for himself? We are anxiously waiting to see Yumna Zaidi and Nouman Ijaz on screen. Overall a good start!
