Honorary degree awarded to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy from Smith’s College USA

World famous Pakistani journalist, filmmaker and activist Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has been awarded honorary degree from USA’s Smith College for her efforts in documentary journalism in advancing human rights. The honorary degree marks another accomplishment for the Oscar winner documentary maker, adding another feather to her already filled hat of success.

Sharmeen received her bachelor’s degree in Economics and Government from Smith College back in 2002. This time around, her degree from the prestigious university is in Fine Arts, honoris causa. Apart from winning the two time Academy Awards, back in June 2017 Sharmeen also won the Knight International Journalism Award for her reporting across the world over the past two decades.

“It was a privilege to be at Smith College‘s Commencement this weekend to receive an honorary degree, and be part of the pageantry and excitement of a ceremony that celebrates the achievements of its students,” shared Sharmeen in a social media post.

In 2017 Obaid-Chinoy bagged an Emmy award at the 38th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards for Best Documentary for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness and made Pakistan proud yet again.


Last year in August, Pakistan’s first ever virtual reality film series “Look but with Love” was released by award winning filmmaker. This five part documentary series is all set to be premiered at the upcoming 55th New York Film Festival, the inaugural Tribeca TV Festival and the Future of Storytelling.
