“Wrong had been acknowledged after 44 years,” said PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday reacting to the SC verdict on the Presidental Reference filed to revisit late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s judicial trial and execution in 1979.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa reading the short order reiterated that the court has decided that Bhutto did not get a fair trial and was not per the Constitutional requirement of due process.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari with other PPP leaders Raza Rabbani, Farooq H. Naek, Sherry Rehman, Faisal Karim Kundi, Qamar Zaman Kaira, and others attended today’s hearing and broke into tears as the Supreme Court announced the verdict.

Teary-eyed Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari welcomed the Supreme Court’s (SC) opinion and termed the development “historic”.

“The court has acknowledged that Zulfikar didn’t get a fair trial. We hope that following today’s historical development — when history is being set straight — the future of this country, the court, and the democracy will be prosperous,” Bilawal said while speaking to the media outside the SC in Islamabad.

Taking to social media, Bilawal in a post on X, said, “More than 44 years after judicial murder and more than 12 years after presidential reference was filed; today a unanimous decision announced by CJP Isa. Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto did not get a fair trial. The pursuit of justice was a labour of love by President Asif Ali Zardari.”
