ECP rejects nomination papers of several key politicians

PTI founder Imran Khan’s nomination papers were rejected for NA 122 Lahore and NA -89 Mianwali.

Nomination papers of several key politicians are reported to have been rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the upcoming general elections scheduled for Feb 8, 2024.

In a major blow to PTI, party founder Imran Khan’s nomination papers were rejected from Lahore’s NA-122 and Mianwali’s NA-89 constituencies.

According to PTI, the nomination papers of its leaders Atif Khan and Ali Muhammad Khan from Mardan, Asad Qaiser, Shahram Tarkai, Shahryar Afridi and Ali Amin Gandapur from Swabi, while the nomination papers of Taimur Jhagra from NA-28 were rejected.

Details of the nomination papers of key politicians being rejected by the ECP are as follows:

Shah Mahmood Qureshi

The nomination papers of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi were rejected from three constituencies of the National Assembly and one constituency of the Provincial Assembly.

Qureshi had filed papers from NA 150, 151, NA 214 Tharparkar and PP 218 Constituency.

Apart from this, the nomination papers of his son Zain Qureshi and daughter Meher Bano were rejected from NA 150 and 151.

The nomination papers of Zain Qureshi and Meher Bano were rejected from PP 218 while the nomination papers of Zain Qureshi were also rejected from PP 219.

Murad Saeed

The Returning Officer (RO) for NA-4 (Swat) on Friday rejected the nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Murad Saeed as the candidate was on the absconder’s list.

Murad Saeed has been absconding since the May 9 incidents.

Qasim Suri

PTI leader Qasim Suri’s nomination papers for NA 263 (Quetta) were rejected by the Returning Officer (RO) declaring him a defaulter and absconder.

On Friday, Balochistan Police conducted a raid at the residence of former deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Qasim Khan Suri, located in the Hanna Urak area of Quetta, according to police sources.

However, Suri was not present at his residence at the time of the raid.

The police action came after an Anti-Terrorist Court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for the former NA deputy speaker.

Sheikh Rasheed

Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed’s nomination papers have also been rejected.

The nomination papers of Sheikh Rashid and his nephew Rashid Shafiq from NA-57 were rejected.

The nomination papers of PML-N’s Chaudhry Daniyal and Sajjad Khan were approved from NA-57, while the papers of PTI’s Chaudhry Adnan were approved from the same constituency

Hamad Azhar

The nomination papers of PTI leader Hamad Azhar were rejected by the provincial assembly constituency PP-171.

Meanwhile, the nomination papers of PTI leaders Azam Niazi and Bajash Niazi were accepted while the papers of PML-N’s Rana Mashhood were accepted from the same constituency.

Fehmida Mirza

Former National Assembly speaker Fehmida Mirza’s nomination papers for NA-223 have been rejected.

Returning Officer Mohammad Nawaz rejected the nomination papers of Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) candidate Fehmida Mirza, her spouse Zulfiqar Mirza and son Hussam Mirza for National Assembly seat NA-223 on being bank defaulters.

Sardar Akhtar Mengal

Balochistan National Party (BNP) Mengal Group chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal’s nomination papers from 2 National Assembly seats and one Provincial Assembly seat were rejected.

Akhtar Mengal’s nomination papers from National Assembly Constituency NA 256 from Khuzdar, NA 264 from Quetta and Balochistan Assembly seat PB-20 Khuzdar were rejected.

As reported the reviewing officer stated that the nomination papers were rejected due to Akhtar Mengal’s residency in the United Arab Emirates.

Jamshed Dasti

The nomination papers of PTI’s Jamshed Dasti from Muzaffargarh were rejected from NA 175, 176 and PP 269, PP 271 while the nomination papers of Jamshed Dasti’s wife from NA 175, 176 were also rejected.

In the latest development for NA 262, out of 55 candidates, 37 nomination papers were approved while 18 nomination papers were rejected.

Nawab Ayazjogezai of Pashtun Khawa Map, Khushal Kakar of Pashtun Khwana National Awami Party and Zahoor Agha of PTI are reported to be among the rejected nomination papers on NA 262.

The nomination papers of Mir Khalid Longo and Prince Umar Ahmadzai from NA 264 Quetta were rejected while the papers of Jamal Raisani, Kabir Ahmed, Salahuddin Mengal, Farid Raisani, Huzoor Bakhsh and Sardar Abdul Razzaq were accepted.

The nomination papers of former Chief Minister Jam Kamal from PB-22 Lasbela have been accepted.
