PPP wins majority seats in Karachi’s local govt by-elections

PPP's victory is being attributed to low turnout of voters

Pakistan Peoples Party won majority seats in the by-elections held in Karachi’s nine local government constituencies for the seats of union committee (UC) chairmen, vice chairmen, and ward councilors.

On Sunday, by-elections in five districts were held peacefully and voters exercised their right to elect three UC chairmen, as many vice chairmen, and three ward councilors in Saddar Town, Mauripur Town, Gadap Town, Malir Town, Jamshed Town, and Nazimabad Town.

According to unofficial results, the PPP turned out to be the winner of a total of five seats followed by the Jamaat-i-Islami, which won two seats of general councilors in Nazimabad and Jamshed Towns.

While the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf won the by-election for the UC vice chairman seat in Saddar Town. An independent candidate also won a general councilor seat in Malir Town.

The voters’ turnout remained low in all nine local government constituencies.

However, the turnout was significantly higher in UC-7 of Gadap Town, where Deputy Mayor Abdullah Murad contested the election.

According to unofficial results, Abdullah Murad secured over 10,000 votes against JI candidate Ayub Khaskeli who bagged only 1,300 votes.
